It was a perfect day for a sand sculpture festival at Tods/Greenwich Point for the 2019 Sandblast event! Hundreds of people came to view the sand sculptures or build their own for the Greenwich Arts Council’s and Town of Greenwich Department of Parks and Recreation’s popular annual event. “Several sand sculptures took top places,” said Joseph Dermody, an artist and sculptor with Harold Avenue Studio, who was the honorary judge from the Greenwich Arts Council. “There was a large shark – Cabot, a family of squid, a shipwreck/alligator, and a drip style castle called Barcelona, to name a few.”
There were a variety of sea animals, a living room (fitted with a large wrap around couch and TV), a mermaid, Hogwarts Castle, a horse, a polar bear mom and cub, several castles, a colorful hummingbird, two billiard tables and many more sand sculptures {scroll down for more photos}. Most of the sand artwork required all family members to help and it took hours to build. Plus, a few professional sand sculptors were onsite, creating masterpieces for everyone to enjoy! There is no specific theme for the sand sculptures, and participants are encouraged to indulge their imaginations enjoying the experience of creating art in the sand. All participants received a gift certificate to Meli-Melo and Beachmate was a sponsor as well.
