Greenwich Library presents: Tellabration! A Celebration of the Oral Tradition

Tellabration is a mammoth storytelling event - and that's no Tall Tale! It's a storytelling phenomenon, made up of dozens of storytelling happenings all over the world. Its purpose is to introduce adults, as well as young adults, to the pleasures of the oral art of storytelling. It is one of the programs offered by The Connecticut Storytelling Center, based at Connecticut College in New London.

Tom Callinan and Carolyn Stearns will be performing stories and songs about Connecticut and New England history.

Tom Callinan’s entertaining and informative narrative style brings audiences of all ages into the performance with catchy choruses, interesting anecdotes, and an assortment of musical instruments. Special attention is paid to sharing the fundamentals of the age-old art of spoon-playing with contemporary audiences.

Tom has a wide variety of programs on Connecticut history including Songs of Colonial Life; Revolutionary War; 1812 Songs; Sea Songs, Chanteys & Tunes; and Civil War-era songs. For Tellabration, Tom will perform material from many time periods. Tom was Connecticut’s first State Troubadour, 1991-1992.

Carolyn Stearns’ repertoire includes a wide selection of historical stories. Based on prominent, as well as lesser know people, her passion for the past and extraordinary ability to connect with groups of all ages makes her a great match for venues of all types. Cathie Hatrick-Anderson of Bobcat Farm said of a performance, "... You can actually put yourself right in the story. Storytelling of this caliber has just about become a lost art. It’s not only refreshing to listen to these stories. It takes the older folks back to the days when grandma and grandpa would spin yarns. I really can’t speak for the younger set, but it may be their first real experience to actually hear a story that’s not coming from a television or a computer. What a treat!"
