Join The Night Diary author, Veera Hiranandani as she discusses her Newbery Honor winning book and how relates it to the current pandemic via a live Zoom session. This children's book appeals to all ages and is a great way for families to start discussions about what is going on in the world now.

Veera will discuss her inspiration for writing this book and how her father’s history as a Partition survivor informed her desire to create a fictional story about a young girl fleeing her home with her family during the 1947 Partition of India. Veera will also be sharing aspects of her writing process and making connections to what we’re experiencing now during the pandemic as a global community.

Though both historical events are very different, Veera will open up questions on how these experiences change us as individuals and as a society and how we can use writing to process and remember our experiences. Veera will also discuss her reasons for writing The Night Diary in an epistolary format, read some examples from the book, and end with a diary writing prompt that writers can continue with after the presentation.

This program is presented by Greenwich Library and the India Cultural Center.
