A New Dawn? Bat Diversity & Habitat Use Post-White-Nose Syndrome

Sunday, January 5th, 2pm-3pm; Family activities from 1:30 – 3:30 PM.

Chris Wisniewski is a faculty member in the biology department at Southern Connecticut State University. He will discuss his research into the deadly disease striking North American bats, white-nose syndrome (WNS). WNS has killed upwards of seven million North American bats over the past decade.  This highly invasive fungal disease is present in thirty-three states and continues to spread on a yearly basis.  Regional species extinctions have been forecasted and many once common species are being considered for endangered lists.  New ecological data details that all may not be lost.  Remnant bat communities are persisting in WNS regions and are utilizing a variety of habitat types.

Is there a new dawn for bats in the era of WNS?
